SOLFORD (Dk. B./Br. S., 1980)

Nijinsky II – Fairness, by Cavan

A son of multiple champion Nijinsky II, Solford came directly from the most commercially successful sire line in the world, that of Northern Dancer. Solford’s racing career included important victories in the highly regarded Coral Eclipse Stakes (Eng-I) and the Prix du Lys (Fr-III). In the Coral Eclipse Stakes (Eng-I) Solford defeated several of Europe’s top performers including Arlington Budweiser Million (GI) winner and champion 3-year-old male (Eng.) Tolomeo, twice champion older mare (Eng.) Time Charter and multiple Group I winner Stanerra. Solford was named champion miler in Ireland at 3. He retired with a record of five wins in six starts and with earnings of $159,807.

By Triple Crown winner and Horse-of-the-Year Nijinksy II, sire of more than 110 stakes winners, including the Breeder’s Cup winners Ferdinand and Dancing Spree. Solford is out of Fairness, dam of No Bias (multiple graded stakes winner) Equal Change and No Duplicate (both placed in G1 Coaching Club American Oaks). Winfield acquired and syndicated Champion Solford in 1983, to stand the 1984 season. His first five crops to race produced 28 winners of 45 races, 19 individual winners in 1989 alone, and cumulative earnings of $543,988. His principal winners include stakes winner Tajroba; stakes placed winner El Sembrador, who placed third in the Clasico Seleccion De Criadores; graded stakes placed Enzo winner of the E.B.F. Eyrefield 2-yr-old Race, placed third in the E.B.F. Leopardstown Stake (Gr.-III); stakes placed Santella Bobkes and Past Remembered, who placed second in the Las Madrinas H. and Honey Fox H. and third in the C.H.B.P.A. Starter H. with earnings of $147,150; and Wildlife who placed second in the Minnesota Breeders’ Derby.

 
 

TIME TO EXPLODE (Ch. S., 1979 – 2005)

The brilliantly fast Time to Explode established himself as a headliner in his first appearance on the track and continued this impressive display of talent with three straight victories including a win over Journey at Sea in the $60,000-added Bolsa Chica Stakes. At three, he won the Yuletide Handicap in new stakes record time, placed second in the Baldwin Stakes, and equaled the world record, running seven furlongs in 1:19 2/5 at Hollywood Park. At four Time to Explode won the Grade II Malibu Stakes over Prince Spellbound and sprint champion Chinook Pass. He placed second, defeated only by half a length, in the 1 1/16-mile San Pasqual Handicap, Gr.-II. In the 1 1/8-mile San Antonio Handicap, Gr.-II, he was again second, this time to champion Bates Motel while conceding the winner seven pounds. Time to Explode retired with earnings of $247,350. By Explodent, winner of both the Bay Shore and Swift S., and the sire of 32 Black Type winners, including: Mi Selecto, Country Queen, Explosive Darling, Explosive Bid, Explosive Wagon, and Explosive Girl. Time To Explode was out of the Olden Times mare Timely Queen.

Twice named Leading Juvenile Sire, Time To Explode, is represented by 20 stakes horses, among them: the multiple graded stakes winner Akinemod, winner of 6 consecutive starts including the El Encino S. (Gr.-II) and the La Brea Breeders’ Cup S. (Gr.-III) with earnings of $281,161; the graded stakes winner Magic Interlude; multiple graded stakes placed Make Contact who placed second in the Ballerina Breeders’ Cup H. (Gr.-III), and the BC Breeders’ Cup Oaks (Gr.-III), with earnings of $281,161.; graded stakes placed Detonated, and Highly Respectable who placed third in the Young America Breeders’ Cup S. (Gr.-III); multiple stakes winners Time To Pass, winner of 10 stakes, including the Joe Gottstein Futurity, the Round Table H., and the Independence Day H., with earnings of $511,638, Flashing Eyes, winner of the Colleen S. and the Miss America S., Explosive Kitten, Reggies Time Ex, Runnenontulsatime and Miss Double Dip; stakes winners Fifth And A Jigger, Saucy Mae, Zola Zola, and Hitumshenyacan; and stakes placed horses Last in time, Baypark, Kickuparow, Time To Sign, and Explode n’ Win.

Yukon was by Northern Dancer (sire of Danzig, Nijinsky II, Nureyev, Lyphard and The Minstrel) and out of Gold Digger, the dam of leading sire and sire of sires Mr. Prospector (sire of Fappiano, Miswaki, Gulch, and Forty Niner). With direct connections to the two most prominent commercial bloodlines in the world at the time, Yukon’s pedigree gave outstanding progeny performance.

The 21 starters from his first crop of 27 named foals included Candi’s Gold, graded stakes winner of $876,640., multiple stakes winner Arctic Cloud, Yukon Dolly, who won or placed in 15 stakes and stakes winner U Con Man. Yukon’s Adjusted SPI of 2.28, ranked him among the leading sires with first foals of 1984. His second crop included 7 winners, among them, stakes placed Yukon Joey ($115,289). His largest and best crop, 54 foals of 1988, was represented by multiple stakes placed Follow Your Heart and stakes winner Dr. Greenberg. Yukon had 26 individual winners on the track in 1989, his crop from that same year produced the multiple stakes winners Yukon Robbery, twice winner of the Fair Grounds Budweiser Breeders’ Cup H. with earnings of $445,154., Go For Glory, Ten Ten Ho and stakes placed Silent Witness. His subsequent crops to race included the multiple graded stakes winning Champion El Bakan, who placed second in the Lexington S. (Gr.-II) and third in the Preakness S. (Gr.-I); stakes winners Yukon Jones, La Bakana; and stakes placed horses Yukon Connie, Tale of the Yukon, Yukon Preston and Yukan B A Lady Too.
