HILAL (Ch. S., 1976)

Royal and Regal – Whistling Rex, by Grey Sovreign

One of the top middle distance performers in Europe, Hilal won or placed in 11 group stakes and earned $270,447. His wins included the Prix Perth (Fr-III), Prix du Rond-Point (Fr-III), Prix de Ris-Orangis (Fr-III, defeating Northjet), and the Prix Montenica. His seconds, frequently by less than a length, included the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Fr-I), Tote Lockinge S. (Eng-II), and Prix Gontaut-Biron (Fr-III). Called a “horse of quality; good mover; high classed performer” by Timeform, Hilal was second highweighted on the 1981 English Free Handicap for his age at middle distance. He was also third ranked on the French Handicap in 1980 and 1981, and on the International Handicap in 1981 in that category.

Hilal is by Royal and Regal, himself a Grade I winning son of Vaguely Noble. His dam Whistling Rex, was out of the English stakes winner Gallop On by Grey Sovereign, a top sprinter recognized for adding speed to a pedigree.

Hilal’s first three crops to race produced Shelal, winner of the Oktoberfest H., Golden Eagle, winner of the Premio Arturo, Eric, Max Y Eric Arturo Delvalle (G.-I) finished second in the Premio Dia Del Locutor Hipico (G.-III)., and won the Premio Heraclio Baretta B., and stakes placed Cardon Ruffles. His subsequent progeny included stakes placed Ginger Candy, Dream, Sunshine Machine and Irish Ryder who placed second in the Diamond State S. with earnings of $124,187. Graded stakes placed Auggies Here, took second in the Sir Ivor S. and third in the Lamplighter H. (Gr.-III), Choice H. and the Japan Racing Association H.; and in 1992 equaled the course record at Meadowlands for a mile and 70 yards in 1:38:37. Paris Rose placed second in the Betsy Ross H. (Gr.-III).

Pilgrim, winner of three races in only five starts, was lengths the best in the Youghal Stakes (Ire)., won the Midsummer Scurry Extended Handicap, and placed second in the Minstrel Stakes.

The classically bred Pilgrim is a son of the great Northern Dancer, out of stakes-placed Fleur, a half-sister to multiple champion and Horse-of-the-Year Nijinsky II and to multiple champion Minsky. His second dam was Canadian 3-year-old champion filly Flaming Page. Pilgrim is a full brother to Horse-of-the-Year The Minstrel and to group stakes winner Far North.

Pilgrim counts 16 stakes horses to his credit, including multiple graded stakes winners Plate Queen, winner of the Thoroughbred Club of America S. (Gr.-III) and Poinsettia S. (Gr.-III), Downing’s homebred Lykatill Hil, winner of 9 stakes with earnings in excess of $789,995., including the 1995 William P. Kyne H. (Gr.-III) at Bay Meadows, where he equaled the 15 year old track record of 1:46.1 for 1 1/8 miles, the Del Mar Budweiser Breeders’ Cup H. (Gr.-II) and the California Juvenile S. (Gr.-III) and Mayflower Lass, winner of the Miss America H. (Gr.-III); multiple stakes winner Pilgrim’s Treasure, winner of 5 stakes with earnings in excess of $286,585.; multiple graded stakes placed Pilgrim’s Gestor; and stakes horses Travelin Lover, Wanateluthspilgrim, Ginny Dare, Benomen, In Regards, Indian Riffle, Banner Bearer, Romina Girl , Money Winner, and Mayflower Memories.

SILVER GHOST (Gr. S., 1982), by Mr. Prospector

Silver Ghost, a winning son of the outstanding sire Mr. Prospector, won his first two starts at Oaklawn Park, breaking his maiden by 5 _ lengths. His second start, in allowance company, resulted in an 11 length victory. At Belmont, he equaled the track record of 1:15 1/5 for 6 _ furlongs and acquired black type status when he placed second in a qualified (Q) handicap. Unraced at 2, he started 6 times at 3, winning or placing in 5, though brief, Silver Ghost’s career demonstrated the same blinding speed that marked the racing careers of his sire and grandsire.

Silver Ghost is out of Halo’s daughter Misty Gallore, the winner of 8 stakes in 19 career starts, including 5 graded, with earnings of $479,711. Silver Ghost joined the Winfield stallion roster in 1987, to stand the 1988 season. His first five crops to race included multiple stakes winners Silver Me Timbers, winner of the Minnesota Breeders’ Derby, the Hopknis S., and the Minnesota Sprint Championship Classic S., Bubba Menkus, who set two track records at Remington Park – 6-1/2 furlongs in 1:15:00 and 7 furlongs in 1:21:60., Glory’s Ghost winner of the American Beauty S., and Illusive Ghost, winner of 6 stakes; multiple graded stakes winners Lunar Spook, winner of the Ashland S. (Gr. -I), with earnings of $419,368., Silver Music, winner of the Swaps S. (Gr. -II), and Winfield bred, born and raised Silver Goblin, Al Horton’s homebred winner of the Razorback H. (Gr.-II) and the Essex S. (Gr.-III) with earnings of $1,025,395. Graded stakes horse Musical Ghost won the Red Smith H. (Gr.-II), and multiple stakes placed winner Apparitiontofollow ran third in the Primer Breeders’ Cup S.
