The Downing Partnership

Winfield, located in Lexington, Kentucky, was established by the son and father partnership of C. Gibson Downing III and C. Gibson Downing Jr. as a private thoroughbred breeding operation. Their common interest, shared perspective and unmistakable dedication to perfection joined with an unshakable work ethic has made Winfield truly an exploration of the ideal.

This is most clearly seen in the facilities and operation itself, and more specifically in the Stallion Complex and Intensive Care Unit. Designed and developed by C. Gibson Downing III, they reflect an emphasis on the life cycle and needs of the thoroughbred, together with the functionality of a state-of-the-art breeding operation in a competitive industry. They have been used as models by noted breeders and veterinarians for development of other farms and clinics, and featured in several industry publications.

Winfield has participated in the production and development of more than 117 stakes horses and earnings in excess of $42,500,000 for its clients and partners, including such graded stakes horses as Cameroon, Ginny Dare, Lykatill Hill, Mayflower Lass, and Silver Goblin. Winfield has the distinction of standing Champions, world record and track record holders from the sire lines of Damascus, Northern Dancer, Explodent, Grey Dawn II and Mr. Prospector, as well as sons of Graustark and the dam of Mr. Prospector, who themselves have produced Champions El Bakan and Shelburne, and Canadian Horse of the Year, Champion Three-Year-Old Colt and Grass Horse Imperial Choice.

The Downings’ commitment to the industry has always involved more than serving their own self-interest. C. Gibson Downing Jr., before his death in 1994, was the epitome of an industry champion not only through his practice as an attorney, but through his service as a Kentucky State Senator, director of the Keeneland Association Inc., and director and president of the Breeders’ Cup Ltd. He received the prestigious Keene Daingerfield Award and the William H. May Award for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the industry. Winfield served as one of the initial sponsors of the Breeders’ Cup. That dedication has been paralleled by C. Gibson Downing III, who served as a legislative assistant under two Kentucky governors, is a sponsor member of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, and a member of the American Horse Council, the Thoroughbred Club of America, and the Kentucky Equine Education Project.
