“The Waterford Crystal”

The Waterford Crystal vase is the symbol of the Keene Daingerfield Award. It was presented to C. Gibson Downing, partner in the operation of Winfield, for his outstanding contributions to the thoroughbred industry by the Kentucky State Racing Commission and the Kentucky Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders in May of 1989.

In 1987 Downing, along with John A. Nerud, was honored by the National Association of State Racing Commissioners with the William H. May Award for their outstanding achievements and contributions to thoroughbred racing.

Both awards honored Downing’s superior contributions to the world of thoroughbred racing and breeding, as well as the generous time and effort given to the industry through his participation in the creation and development of the Breeders’ Cup program, in which he served as President of Breeders’ Cup Limited.
